What a refreshingly straightforward and unpretentious website. Thank you for the ESL materials - as is no doubt obvious from my address, that's what I was looking for (well done IT sheets, thanks!) If only the rest of the web (and its users) were equally welcoming and helpful.

We will be in Paris at the end of July for our 50th anniversary, so I was doing a little research. I found you through the Promenade Plantee article in Wikipedia! This is a wonderful website. The rude comment by the last person provoked me into signing your Guest Book.

You've evaded your landlord from evicting you for non-payment. You continually post about how you're "so poor" and yet you spend €18 at a restaurant that's one step above McDo and say you'll go back? You bitch about Chinese tourists who push in front of you in line, which is a French pastime and call them rude. You're a bigot. No sympathy from me. You're just another immigrant that contributes to this country's slide into poverty. Go back to the US where deadbeats like you are welcome.

I think you may have typed your location incorrectly—according to my logs, you were posting from Texas, USA, not Paris, France. I've corrected the typo. It does leave me a bit confused about which country is sliding into poverty, who the real immigrants are, and which country you are suggesting a return to, however.

I've spent 2 hours on your site and have just scratched the surface. After reading some of the information, maybe I'll consider Paris, although I've never seriously considered visiting anyplace in Europe. Well, maybe Ireland. I guess I got spoiled being in Japan while in the Air Force. While there, we tried to live "on the economy" as much as possible. Your site is great and I will look at it in it's entirety.

wow, i haven't spent as much time in preparing our family trip to europe at any other web site than i did on yours! Thank you for the useful information. I have copied some bits of it and pasted it in my Microsoft OneNote application. I use this app to collect all sorts of bits of info for our trip. I considered making use of your personal guide service but would not require a full day's service unfortunately. perhaps you could consider shorter periods as well... perhaps a 1 hour face-to-face consultation to provide personal advice once we are in Paris?
I'm sure to visit your pages again as our December trip approaches.

I have been following your wonderful website for years. It has been a great source of enjoyment and ideas for new things to see on future trips to Paris. I love that you have been adding videos and especially enjoyed the new one on Pere Lachaise cemetery. My favorite tomb there is that of Heloise and Abelard, the lovers separated during life and finally reunited many years later here at Pere Lachaise. Thanks for sharing all your photos and videos.

Hi Anthony, I just discovered your site by looking for the Promenade Plantee. I LOVE your video of the Paris Street Furniture, thank you so much. I've been taking photos of similar things in Melbourne, but a video is so much better, you have given me new inspiration. I love Paris too, but only get to visit rarely as I'm so far away in Australia, but I was there in 2011. Your site brings it all back to me. All the best, Inge.

I don't know much French, but will be learning before I arrive. It has been a dream of mine to go to France for a long time so this is quite exciting for me and your site has been exceptional! I still have so much more of your site to explore and look forward to it very much. Hi, Anthony,
I like this site very much and get a few laughs here and there.
You said "Also, I like Paris ... but not necessarily Parisians. Two different things. — AA"
I know exactly what you mean. I felt the same about Florence. I lived there for 2 years and I loved the city even more than Paris, but not the people. (I am talking about Florentines, not Italians.) They made me crazy. I realize they had been made crazy themselves by the hordes of rude tourists there so it wasn't really their fault.
The French seemed so much more pleasant when I came here from there to visit, so I moved to France. I have no complaints.
As much as I miss Florence, I know we wouldn't get along, so I don't dream to move back there anymore.

Hi Anthony, I'm getting ready for a trip to France in early May (Paris & the Loire Valley), and found your site while looking for info on non-French food. My husband is a "snout-to-tail", adventurous eater, and I'm not. Actually, I'm a cranky person, and am going to attempt to adjust but also know that I'm going to end up eating many baguettes & cheese. Just in case I have a food breakdown knowing where I can get something American-like will give me piece of mind. So, long way of saying why I'm here. Thanks so much for the information. I'm sure it will help me be less crabby at dinnertime.

Why do you live in Paris when you seem to hate all things French, hate the city, hate the people? All you do is complain, complain, complain about what you find wrong with the city, the people, their way of life. Every post I've read from you, every single one, complains about Paris. Why do you stay? And don't tell me you "love" Paris. Clearly, you don't.

I'm very poor. When you're poor, you tend to be irritable and complain a lot. If I were poor in another city (say, Austin), I'd probably be even more irritable, but Paris is a good place to be poor, as large cities go. Also, I like Paris ... but not necessarily Parisians. Two different things. It's possible to be very happy in Paris if you have lots of money, which isn't true for most cities. — AA
Hello Anthony.
I came across your web site while searching for a picture of a "vespasienne". The additional comments were so informative, that I literally ended up spending
nearly an hour reading some of your other posts. As a French, I've been to Paris several times although living in Tahiti, French Polynesia, about 10,000 miles
away, in the Pacific Ocean. Yet, thanks to your work, talent, very informative comments and your outstanding pictures, I feel like I am discovering a new
Paris...its beauty and charm unveiled through the eyes of a "foreigner", (someone born with another culture). Thank you so much, it has been an absolute joy
reading your blog.

Salut Anthony ! After visiting the High Line Park in New York City last week I searched the web to
see if they had taken the idea from La Promenade Plantée in Paris (I still don't know) as I am going to write a post about it on
my blog. There was a link to your site under Viaduc des Arts and so I came over to read about it. I also read your comments about
the strikes in Paris and the media. You are absolutely right. I read the news in French then see those same news on the TV here
and they are sometimes very different. You have a lot of material on your site. I'll come back to read more.

Hi Anthony - I am a letterpress printer and publisher - I use antique lead type and ARAB platen presses to produce handmade books by Kiwi writers. There aren't many people doing this these days. I'm 51 and learnt my trade in the 70's/80's before letterpress dissapeared. So - Ive been doing a job for a local art gallery. Im printing 'Dr. jekyll and mr. Hyde' with a local artist who is making 10 ilustrations. Im printing the title page/contents/copyright etc and Im using your version of Dr. jekyll for the text. As a compositor I'm really 'impressed' (sorry!) by your layout/comping etc of dr. jekyll. Im only using from the first page of text to the last - no acknowledgements with your name/addresses/details etc as per the security instructions on your PDF. The artist is jason greig - Would you like a finished copy of the book. It'll be handbound with embossed titles in Foolscap on lovely paper. Regards Rob lamb and The Gumtree Press. Great site! I was an exchange student in France while in high school and have been back quite a few times since. I loved it every single time, regardless of where my travels brought me during each visit. I work in the airline industry as well and was quite excited to find so many of my favorite topics displayed on one site :) I'm hoping to return again next spring and I have your page bookmarked for a Paris refresher tour of things I might have missed in my younger days, lol. A quick question for you if you have the time: Any idea where I could buy some of my favorite French foods online? I'm looking for a place that offers delivery to the US and I'm not too concerned with the price/shipping/tax. What I REALLY miss more than anything and would literally die for is Pommes Noisettes/Dauphine; I don't care if they are frozen, fresh, homemade, etc, I just miss them so passionatly that I dream of them on a regular basis, haha :)) If you know of anywhere that sells French foods internationally that might be able to help me I would be eternally grateful! Thanks again and good luck with your travels! Merci beaucoup et j'espere que tout va bien! :)

Hi Anthony,
We've been in Paris for a few months now of our 5 month trip, and I found your Paris Metro guide (April 2009) the other day—it seems very useful.
I noticed when talking about transfers between buses you state that a new ticket is needed if changing buses.
The RATP.fr website says about "e ticket t+": “Le client dispose de 1h30 entre la première validation et la dernière validation pour effectuer une ou plusieurs correspondances. À chaque changement de mode de transport, le ticket doit être à nouveau validé.”
I THINK this means that one is supposed to be able to use the same ticket on multiple forms of transport within 90 minutes, for a one-way trip. I have not made any multiple bus trips, but my wife and kids did the other day and did not report any issues with using a single ticket for two buses.
Another item that might be worth mentioning—the bus drivers seem to charge €0.10 more for a ticket (€1.70; rather than €1.60) compared to a machine or station. This is also listed on the ratp.fr website.
When our little family uses a metro ticket, we rip off a bit from the corner to show it has been used. This is a bit easier to spot than the validation mark made by the machines, particularly when mixed with other unused tickets in a pocket or purse, and the tickets still run through the validation machines without trouble.

I'll check into these details and update the guide as necessary. The last revision was mainly to include new information on the late, great Carte Orange and the new Navigo passes, so I may have overlooked changes to the bus fare system. I haven't tried a correspondance on the bus in ages, and the last time I actually bought a ticket from a bus driver, the ticket cost the same as it did in a station, but things may have changed now. — AA

Hi Anthony! Thanks for such an informative site! I moved to Paris a little over a year ago & have started a blog of my own: analienparisienne at Wordpress. I got here through a friend asking me about Burger Kings in Paris & your page on fast-food was what Google picked up. :) You've got a really well-organized site and fantastic photos. I liked your blog a lot, too.
Be well & thanks again!

Great site, Anthony!
You probably don't remember me from the early days on various Compuserve Forums (back in the days of numerical-only log-ins) but it's geat to see that you're still around and still doing your thing with this web site, which is now a resource to be treasured by anyone interested in Paris.
I kind of miss those early internet days, before it got so ubiquitous.
Look forward to visiting the site in the future to see how you continue to grow it.

Hi! Your Guide to Paris transportation brought me to your website. First of all i LOVE the sites simplicity. No fancy pancy stuff, just plain well organized information. Thank you!
I havent checked the whole site yet, but one thing i really missed in your guide to Paris transportation, was a map covering the zones. Maybe an idea for future updates?

I've considered adding a map many times, but I'd either have to draw one myself (possible, but extremely time-consuming—I started on it once but it was very slow going) or license one from a third party, which would involve all sorts of red tape and money that I don't have. So for the moment there's no map. Maybe someday. In the meantime, Métro stations will give you tiny, free maps if you request them (doesn't help unless you're already in Paris, though). — AA
Excellent websites! Came here when following a link to the little Statue of Liberty - the replica donated by Americans to the French. My wife and I are Americans and plan to go home to the United States sometime, going the other way around the world, via Paris, which both of us have been to twice - but it was many years ago. We will try to look you up whenever it is we come through.
Also I REALLY enjoyed reading your blog for this month. Keep up the excellent work and hope you don't let the turkeys get you down (putting up with all those hassles you mentioned!)

Hello Anthony, I was (some 5 years ago the ....tiest visitor of your site and you sent me a Michelin guide for it. (still using it now and then) I have grown in my French quite a bit since then. I became a teacher of French and recently i purchased a "residence secondaire" in Pierrefonds(60350) (near the castle). It's a very cute small house and if you have the possibility, you're very welcome to visit us any time you want! We regularly visit Paris now and still love it. Many greetings from Holland !

Anthony - With all due respect: - Your "better judgement" (acknowledged / respected) - isn't what WE want: - We (selfishly) want Anthony's blog again! (it gets worse ...)
- If & when it is convenient, would you mind carrying your fave choice of portable (digital / analogue) camera around with you, and perhaps if it is practical continue to let your Paris blog have it's way now and then, svp? Even worse yet - (my stupid idea) - may we please possibly have a method on this site to request (by form / whatever using Paypal, etc) you "recon" / cruise a specific Parisian site or address, etc, based on a specific / cost-efficient donation, and photo / blog it?? (I'd get my wallet out for that!) Summary: - If you don't mind, please acquiesce and cast a few occasional blogpearls now and then, "better judgement" be damned. We / me will gobble them up with gratitude (oink oink!) and do what we can to donate accordingly. All the best! Long life & good health 2 U, AA!!

I became interested in your website because I spotted a graphic you did at: http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/png-rgba32.html I am not an artist but I do need to incorporate some artist techniques on my website to bring it up to the necessary quality. In general you create masks that give the edges of the circles varying levels of opacity. If you have any additional tips and have enough time maybe you could let me know how you went about creating this graphic and why you prefer this method of smoothing curves compared to anti-alias.

Always the best fotos on the planet of Paris, but tonight I caught your excellent photograph of Omaha Beach. Imo you got it just
right (even the tide, I think, per width of the beach from the cliffs). Thanks as always for sharing. Hope this finds you well.
Charles Durning is an excellent character actor, but I never knew he was in one of the first waves at Omaha Beach until recently (not to mention the Malmedy
massacre later). What a life he's lived. He gives a moving & detailed testimony to the invasion here:

altho living in USA for past year immediately wish to advise you I am an Anglo- South African, not an American, for which I am very proud! Always fascinated by the City of Light which has prompted many conversations over various dinner tables with the result that quite a few friends and friends of friends wish to travel from the west coast of the USA to sample the delights of Paris! The general consensus is a) a desire to stay in Paris as non-tourist as possible! and b) to be able to dine and converse with locals, on a couple of occasions during their stay, which invariably will be one week. Very interesting page. My first visit, a short one, to Paris was back in 1940, when the Germans had just moved in!
I need some help. A friend of mine, a French Air Force General, would like to contact Brian Scul in order to obtain his permission to publish one of his stories in a French aviation publication. Would you happen to know how to reach Brian? I do not find him listed in the Air Force Association membership roll. Also, he does not appear in the USAF Academy register.
In any case, keep up the good work.

A lot of things, facts and statements are wrong on your website. I don't know what part of paris
you pretend to know, but i guess you don't really know my city. Paris is extremely dangerous and touristes should be warned
of it. French crime rate is higher than american crime rate. Paris is much more dangerous than new york city is. Some
tourists got murdered over the past decades for resisting robberies (amongsta other things). Some parts of the inner
cities are still decay even though there's a kind of gentrification in the city, and a huge part of the suburbs
(and still some inner city sections, even in the 14th, 13th and 12th arrondissement, but especially in the 18th,
19th and 20th) are places where tourists would not last two minuts. Not to mention the northeastern suburbs, the
greater western, eastern and southen suburbs, a part of the western suburb, and a part of the northern suburb.
Don't you remember the 2005 riots?? ANd that was no exclusivity, there are similar events every week, in every
french city (and not only major cities)
Second thing, we call mac donald's macdo
because it's shorter, not because it's hard to pronounce in french.

Hello,
I've come across this page while looking something else : ParisFastFood.html and I must say that some things you say in it just amaze me. How can you say,
without laughing, that "The French often refer to McDonald's as the MacDo /makdo/, since it's hard for them to say the complete name."
Never heard about shorting names ? Do none of your friends call you "Tony" sometimes ? If you're not joking, then clearly, either you have some problems
with foreigners, or you're just stupid.
I don't see useful to comment on the rest of the article, since it's your point of view and I respect that (I would even agree on some points), but
I'd like you to correct that if
you please :)
You can erase this message from your guest book if you want, I won't mind. I just wanted to give you my imput, as some sort of "local".
Have a nice stay in France anyway :)

hey. i was looking up disney paris on google image search and came across your site. i am a pretty tech/internet savvy person, being a teen who spends probably on average a good 4 hours on the internet a day. sad, but true. like most teens it is my life. with that being said i would sincerely say that your site is one of the best travel pages i have ever come across and being a frequent traveler who uses the internet for every possible reason when it comes to said traveling, i like to think that says something. point being, props on your site. its very helpful and one of the few where there is a real person's advice. numbers and data can only go so far and your site gives the real person information which is always welcomed and greatly appreciated. once again, great job.

Anthony, You have an amazing site here. I am an ESL teacher working on a project and I came across this gem. I now have beautiful new wallpaper on my desktop to remind me to save all my leftover (HA!) money so that I can get to France next summer.

Just found your site, despite having spent many months researching France (Paris, in particular). Have an apartment waiting for me in a few weeks and though that I'd be doing some cooking .... well, no stove top and hot plates are forbidden ... hmmmmmm.
Well, THANKS TO YOU for mentioning about "Picard" ... I went to their website, looked at their offerings, and I feel much better about only having a microwave in the apartment.
Yours is the first site I found which mentions it -- either that, or I just skipped over it all the guide books.
Thanks again.

Your website has been most helpful. I will be meeting my significant other in Paris in July. He is an American working on a contract in Africa and I have not seen him in 4 months. We are looking to take in the sights and spend quality time together. I have visited many websites, and I found yours to be most informative. Thanks for such a marvelous insight into Paris.

My wife and I have visited Paris a number of times, and I miss it every minute that I'm away. I just spent the past hour viewing your Paris Street Scenes, and I feel like I was there. They are such wonderful photos. Thank you so much for this website.

Anthony:
I don't mean to disrupt your business, but anyone with a name like mine requires a word two! Because many script pages are too much for my patience to endure, all I got-out-of your site was that you are into photography of some sort! I know the difficulties in establishing onesself in any area of endeavor and wish you luck and greetings for a successful 2006-7!

Hi, Anthony -- Thnx for your website! Question: do I discern correctly that you are an ESL instructor? I was exploring the possibility of pursuing certification as an instructor and somehow found you. In particular, I'd prob'ly be interested (eventually) in teaching in Paris as you do. I find I am addicted to her. If you are an ESL instructor, have you done this long? Has it been difficult to find/keep work? Is there a "community" of teachers? Just wondering. Thnx -- Pam

Yes, I'm an ESL instructor, as well as a tour guide. Just like George Orwell when he was starving in Paris. Unfortunately, the situation for tour guides and ESL instructors in Paris has not changed since the days he lived here, so I'm starving, too. I do photography and other things as well, but those pay even less (or nothing at all, in some cases). — AA
I enjoyed your site which was found when looking in Google for the translation of Notre Dame. In Babel it translated as "Our Injury" which seemed strange - so I went looking in Google and saw you. My family and I are going to Paris next year in July. I definitely would like to contact you for a tour.

I am going to Paris in a few weeks and am overwhelmed with everthing I don't know about. I am not sure how I got directed to your website. I think from a picture from the pont neuf that I plugged in from google.... thought I must be dreaming from all that lead me too. Cannot thank you enough for all the information you provide. It is invaluable.... You should write a book! Your photos are just beautiful. Thanks again! Gayle

Hi, I just wanted to say how great and innovative I think your website is. It's so nice to see when people actually get motivated to execute something like this and I think it's great. My brother sent it to me (he lives there) recommending a sight and I in turn have sent it to two more people in HK who asked me for tips on where to go (I used to live there). So thank you and well done!

This is totally amazing!!! I have stayed up the greater portion of a night entranced by your vast knowledge and the manner of presentation. Of all the sites of and about Paris this is hands down the best. You must be a remarkable person with the obvious ability to make clarity of what could be an impossible situation. The links work!!! The pictures, wall paper, tables, and references respond with ease. I am making a trip in a few weeks -- 4 to be exact -- to your beautiful city. It has been 34 years since my wife and I last visited. Thirty five years ago we spent our honeymoon In Paris and our children gave us the gift of a return trip in celebration of our 35th anniv. I just wish to thank you for all the effort, time, scholarsip, dedication, organization this mamouth site represents. Few places I have visited on the net match your peresentation. Plus it is now 6:38 a.m. and I stumbled into your site about 4 hours ago. Many thanks, Tom

Anthony, I trust you are well.
I make a point of reading your blog every week and have noticed that you have not been writing as often as you used to as well as the fact that you don't include as many of your photos. Just wanted to make sure you were well. I travel to Paris at least once a year and always check your site before I go.
Your site is the best. Kind regards.

I happened onto this site having done a search for "Inverted Pyramid" as refered to in a spiritual blog I was reading. Since I don't believe in coincidenses, I will be keeping a link to this website in my favorites for future use. The topic of "a trip to Paris" has come up between my fiance and I. So....
I think you have a great site and I have to thank you for sharing and of course for self-promoting. I am impressed.

Hi! Anthony,
I am French (was born in Neuilly/Seine, from Ugandan parents). I live in the suburbs of Paris, not so far from Versailles. I read your article about restaurants and it made me laugh so badly. Mostly, because I happen to work in Quick at Montparnasse. I've been working there for more than a year and what you said is so true (about the trays, the mouse, the soda-filling above the line)
Anyway, I'd never imagined someone would write about that.

What can I say? Truth is my middle name; I call ’em as I see ’em. I still go to these places occasionally, but I have no illusions about them being squeaky clean or anything like that. And at least Quick doesn't lock its emergency exits as often as McDonald's does. — AA
I looked trough your pictures from Paris today. There are many interesting pictures in your gallery but my favourite are Les Deux Magots, Marais Qurter and another one with some street (many restaurants and caffee), but I can't find now it's name. I like very much the mood of this pictures. I'm photographer too, but not very serious... always I make some pictures for my office of promotion in our town Torun - this is the place where Nicolaus Copernicus was born. 2 march 2006 I 'm flying to Paris - it is my first time in Paris. Of course now I interested in all of Paris...Margaret
