My policy towards students and teachers using my images is pretty easygoing. I realize that they usually have no money and are not using my images for profit, so I normally don't charge anything for permission to use them. However, I still require that they ask permission. My definition of school use is as follows:
In all cases, the work must not be intended for commercial or external publication in any form. Commercial publication means any publication that will be sold—as is occasionally done by universities for doctoral and other theses. External publication is any publication outside the school itself, and includes placing the work on a Web site or server that is accessible to the outside world. If any kind of external or commercial publication is anticipated or possible, please see my general policy on licensing for more information.
Some types of use of my images in school are covered by “fair-use” provisions of United States copyright law, if you are in the United States. Some other countries have similar provisions. If your use legitimately falls under such provisions and they are applicable in your jurisdiction, then obviously you don't need my permission for such use. However, my experience is that teachers and students are utterly clueless when it comes to actually understanding fair-use exemptions to infringement and often believe that it covers their use when in fact it does not; and so I suggest that you ask me for permission, anyway, even if you think the use falls under these provisions.
As always, contact me if you have any questions.
