I received my 16,000,000th visitor, although it was actually someone trying to access a photo on my site from another site that contained a blog. The next "real" visitor after that was someone looking at my ESL materials. This corresponds to about 1.14 million visitors per year.

Over the catastrophic "holidays," my Web server crashed entirely, and had to be completely reconstructed from scratch. As a result, my site was down for about two weeks. It is back up now, although some bugs still have to be worked out over the days and weeks to come.

Changed my Guest Book so that I must review all signatures before they are posted to the site. This replaces the automatic system I had before. Constant spamming of the guest book has left me no choice but to check every signature manually before it goes in.

At 00:30:18 today, a customer of Turk Telecom following a link from a Turkish blog to one of my pictures of Disneyland became visitor number 15,000,000 to my site. This corresponds to 1,755,972 visitors per year; the winter period is somewhat slower than the summer period (which shows about 1.88, based on figures from October, below).

At 07:38:14 today, someone surfing my site in search of a picture of the Eiffel Tower became visitor number 14,000,000 to my site. It looks like the person was surfing from a school in the UK, but it's hard to be sure because of the several layers of IP address assignments. Based on the previous turnover in April, this corresponds to about 1.88 million unique visitors per year.

Switched output encoding to UTF-8 to better support special characters, and replaced all odd character codes with correct HTML escape sequences. This is most obvious for IPA transcriptions when viewed by Firefox browsers (they come out correct—MSIE doesn't render them correctly).

The motherboard on my Web server fried a few days ago, and I had to completely replace the server hardware, which took my site down for several days. With help from friends and relatives I scraped up enough money to get new hardware, and the site is finally back online today.

I've moved the Street Scenes as well. I have had to compress everything very aggressively in order to get it all to fit, so the quality of the images has suffered. This is the only alternative to having extremely slow download times, however, until and unless I can afford real hosting for the site on a system with some bandwidth.
It is still possible to get the original, full versions of the images, by replacing the "www" in the URL of my site with "friends", but the image downloads will be extremely slow.

The site was down briefly after I put a configuration parameter in the wrong place and messed up the server. A helpful visitor alerted me to this by e-mail and I got it fixed about two or three hours later.

On the evening of April 19, 2000, this site celebrated its 500,000th visitor, when a chance visitor from Dragon Internet in Ohio (USA) surfed to the home page of the site and became visitor number 500,000. The site is currently receiving nearly 48,000 visitors per month, and should celebrate its one-millionth visitor sometime around mid-November of 2001.
