Passage des Panoramas

This is the Pasage des Panoramas, a nineteenth-century shopping gallery, still going strong after more than 200 years—it was built in 1799, and is one of the oldest shopping galleries in Paris.

These galleries were the olden-day equivalent of shopping malls today, and there are still dozens of them in the city today. They tend to host quirky retail businesses and restaurants.

This gallery got its name from a variety of panoramic paintings that it once featured, long ago. It has a vary long history, and is a national monument—and so are some of the shops it contains.

This is only part of the mall. At the far end it branches off to the left. It’s right across the steet from the Passage Jouffroy. In this photo, you're looking south, and the main entrance (on the boulevard Montmatre) is behind you.
