Department Stores at Christmas

Department Stores at Christmas

In this evening photograph, two large buildings of about nine stories each, and in similar, turn of the century architectural styles stretch off into the distance from left to right next to a broad boulevard. At ground level at the front of each building, beneath squarish blue canopies spanning the better part of a broad sidewalk, we can see large, brilliantly-lit store windows; holiday shoppers and their children crowd in front of them. Tall trees along the sidewalks of the boulevard are decorated with dripping garlands of tiny pink lights and paper "leaves." The facades of the buildings themselves are lit from bottom to top with blue and pink floodlighting. In the foreground on the left we see a rounded tower floodlit in pink at the corner of the nearest building, featuring ornate sculpture and the words "Au Printemps" imbedded in mosaic tiles near the top. The words "Magasins du Printemps" chiseled into this same tower are just barely visible over the doors at its base. Similar towers are visible at other corners of both buildings in the distance. On the boulevard itself, traffic is heavy; this is clearly rush hour.

Technical details: Nikon N80 + AF Nikkor 24-85/2.8-4D IF, Fujichrome Provia 100F color reversal film (ISO 100), on tripod, about 2 seconds at f/8, cropped, color-adjusted, and corrected for perspective in Photoshop
