Avenue Foch

     AvenueFoch

The avenue Foch /avny foʃ/ has a reputation for being the most expensive residential avenuein Paris, and the reputation is well deserved. Apartments along this avenue sell for many millions of dollars each, and rent for tens of thousands of dollars a month. For years, the avenue has been particularly popular with wealthy residents from Arab countries, but that has faded in recent years as changing oil prices have diminshed thewealth of oil-producing Arab countries somewhat. Of course, other wealthy residentsflock to the avenue as well.

In recent years, an attempt to evict prostitutes from the nearby Bois deBoulogne (a huge city park that begins right next to the western end of thisavenue) caused them to stream onto the avenue Foch in the evenings, tarnishing thereputation of the neighborhood and lowering property values. I don't know what thecurrent situation is as far as property values go, as I don't keep up on such stuff. The apartments are still very expensive, of course.

In this picture, taken in the early afternoon, you are looking northeast towards theArc de Triomphe, which is at the upper end of the avenue. I have a photograph of this avenue taken fromthe top of the arch at about the same time of day, if you are interested.

Photographed onAugust 15, 2001.
