This is a mailbox for letters, owned and serviced by the French postal service (La Poste). Some mailboxes are freestanding, mounted on a pedestal, as this one is, and others are mounted on the exterior wall of a building, in which case the pedestal is obviously absent. The yellow color is the standard color of the French postal service. Here in Paris, mailboxes usually have two slots, one for Paris and its metropolitan area (on the left), and one for everywhere else (on the right). The silver plaque beneath the two slots gives the pick-up schedule for mail deposited in the box. The paint on the box is of a nearly indestructible type from which graffiti can be easily removed.

This particular mailbox is on the place Vauban, across from the Hôtel des Invalides, which can be seen in the background.
