Allée des Cygnes

first      previous      next      last

Between the pont de Grenelle bridge and pont de Bir-Hakeim bridge on the Seine River, there is a little tree-lined, paved path on a sort of dike or pier running in the center of the river from one bridge to another. This path, called the allée des Cygnes /ale de siɲ/ (“Promenade of the Swans”) is very quiet and pretty, and far from the traffic of the city. It’s a popular spot to walk or jog.

You are looking northeast in this picture (upstream). On either side of the path, you can see the Seine River. In the background, you can see the Bir-Hakeim bridge, with its elevated Métro line (the bridge was seen often in the movie Last Tango in Paris, by the way). And if you look very closely at the upper right, behind the trees, just next to the lamppost, you can see part of the Eiffel Tower off in the distance.

Photographed on May 28, 2000.
