View from Butte Montmartrefirst previous next last This is the view from the steps of Sacré-C&oeligur basilica on the Butte Montmartre /byt mõmaʁtʁ/. This was an extremely clear day in August, and you can see all the way to the Paris city limits and beyond. You are looking due south in this photograph. You can identify many parts of Paris if you know where to look. Starting from the extreme left, some of the sights include: the George Pompidou Center (Beaubourg); the University of Pierre and Marie Curie; the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris; the Church of Saint Eustache (near the Forum); the Panthéon right behind that; the Louvre Museum; the Montparnasse Tower (the tallest structure visible here); and the Orsay Museum. A number of other landmarks, including the Opéra Garnier, the Eiffel Tower, and the Arc de Triomphe, are off to the right or hidden by trees and not visible here. Others, such La Villette, are too far off to the left to be visible in the photo. Photographed on August 7, 1999. |
