View of the Ground from the First Platform

first      previous      next      last

This is the area at the base of the Eiffel Tower, as seen from the first platform (19 stories above the ground). The center of the first platform is open, so you can look directly at the ground below.

At the top of this photograph, you can see the structure of the tower, in shade. Below that, you can see the one of the gardens that have been constructed on either side of the tower (this one is on the northeastern side). In the shade below that in the picture, you can see the hexagonal roofs of small snack bars beneath the tower. On the right, near the northern pillar of the tower, you can see the gilded bust of Gustave Eiffel (compare this to my waiting line photograph to get a better idea of scale).

The blurred diagonal object on the lower right is part of a railing on the platform. You are looking northeast and nearly straight down in this photograph.

See also my Eiffel Tower FAQ for more information on this landmark.

Photographed on May 12, 1998.
