Rue de la Huchettefirst previous next last This is the rue de la Huchette, one of several pedestrian streets in the heart of the Latin Quarter of Paris. Most of this pedestrian area, known as the Saint Severin Quarter, is occupied by restaurants (mostly Greek, thanks to the proximity of a nearby Greek Orthodox church) and tourist shops. It is quite animated at just about any time of the day and well into the night, especially during the school year, when the Latin Quarter is crowded with university students. On this street can be found the Théâtre de la Huchette, which has been showing the same two Eugene Ionescu plays for fifty years (really!), and the Caveau de Huchette, one of the best known jazz clubs in Paris. This photo was taken on a weekday evening in summer, but crowds are heaviest on Fridays and Saturdays. Photographed on August 1, 2008. |
