Square du Vert Galant (Interior)

first      previous      next      last

This is the interior of the square du Vert Galant.

You are looking west in this photo, which was taken from the place du Pont Neuf just above and to the east of the park. This was a warm day, and there were lots of people relaxing in this small and quiet square.

Freemasons and other historians may be interested in knowing that it was just below the spot from which this photo was taken that the last Grand Master of the Knights Templars, Jacques de Molay, was burned at the stake by Philip IV the Fair on March 19, 1314—while Philip watched from his palace. At the time, this end of the island was just a couple of marshy outcroppings from the water.

Photographed on May 15, 2000.
