Arc de Triomphe du Carrouselfirst previous next last This is the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, in the Tuileries gardens near the Louvre. It is a kind of little sister to the much larger Arc de Triomphe (de l’Étoile) at the top of the avenue des Champs-Élysées. Like the larger Arc, it celebrates war. It is a bit older than the large arch, and it was consciously designed to imitate the Arch of Septimus Severus in Rome. In the background you can see the Louvre Museum itself. You’re looking east in this photograph, which was taken on a pleasant afternoon in August. Photographed on August 22, 1999. |
